Washington school districts are required to calculate and pay tax for goods on which no sales tax has been charged by the vendor. Compensating Tax, or Comp Tax, is the total of these taxes due to state and local authorities. The state Department of Revenue serves as a collection entity and distributes the funds collected to the appropriate levels of taxing authority. Compensating Tax includes at least the Washington state sales tax.
Compensating Tax uses the following tables to calculate the appropriate tax rates for invoices:
Tax Districts: define jurisdictional area where a certain tax rates are applicable to purchases of taxable goods and services.
Tax Type Codes: store the codes and descriptions for Comp Tax components such as sales, transportation, utilities, or stadium.
Tax Rates: store current and historical tax rates for the tax districts.
Sites: assign a tax district to each building or shipping destination within a school district.
