1 Overview

As part of the federal "No Child Left Behind" (NCLB) legislation, OSPI is required to collect information on unexcused absences from all schools offering Grades 1-8. This will be used to determine if schools make adequate yearly progress (AYP) as part of the Title I accountability system. This information has been provided in the past using SPI Form 1302, but for the entire district and not broken down by individual schools.

This report contains data for students in grades 1 through 8 who have unexcused absences as required by NCLB legislation. The counts for unexcused absences are broken down into nine categories: All Students, American Indian, Asian/Pacific Islander, Black, Hispanic, White, Special Education, Limited English, and Low-Income. Districts will take the output from the report and enter it on a Web form on the OSPI Web site.

The term "unexcused absence" means a student has failed to attend the majority of hours or periods in an average school day or has failed to meet the school district’s more restrictive attendance policies for unexcused absences. The program will not look for less restrictive attendance policies. For more information see RCW 28A.225.020.

Unexcused absences that are consecutive for 20 days or more will not be included in the reporting count. For more information see WAC 392-121-108.
