13 Body &endash; Report Period and Cumulative Summary

The Report Period and Cumulative Summary section of the standardized transcript is comprised of a total line for each report period (oldest to most recent), plus a grand total line for all data in the Academic Record section. A report period consists of all the grade mark information for a unique combination of month/year and grade level. Totals are printed for:

Credits Earned

Credits Attempted

GPA Credits Earned

If the grade mark = "E" or "F", the GPA credits earned = 0.00.

If the grade mark = "A", "A-", "B+", "B", "B-", "C+", "C", "C-", "D+", or "D", the GPA credits earned value is used unless that value is divided (see Section 11, Dividing Credits).

GPA Credits Attempted

The GPA credits attempted value is used unless that value is divided (see Section 11, Dividing Credits).

GPA Points

Summary:  Within each report period, the appropriate GPA grade points for each grade mark are multiplied by the GPA credits earned. The results are added to calculate the total GPA points.

The chart of GPA grade points for each grade mark is printed in the Header of the standardized transcript.

Details:  When the GPA grade mark points are multiplied by the GPA credits earned, the credits value used is one that is stored in the database as a number that is rounded to five decimal places; for example, 0.33333 and 0.66667.

Examples of GPA points for individual courses:

(Rounding rule:  If the last position = 0&endash;4, round down; for example, 0.333333 rounds to 0.33333.  If the last position = 5&endash;9, round up; for example, 0.666666 rounds to 0.66667.)

The GPA points for each course are calculated to five decimal places and each result is added in order to obtain the total GPA points for the report period. That result for the report period is then rounded to three decimal places for printing on the standardized transcript.

Using the examples of GPA points above, the total GPA points for the report period is:

1.33332 + 1.23332 + 2.66668 + 2.46668 + 2.06668 = 9.76668 = 9.767 when rounded to three decimal places for printing on the standardized transcript.

Sum of the GPA points (five decimal places) for the report periods; rounded to three decimal places for printing on the standardized transcript.

GPA

Summary:  Within each report period, the GPA credits attempted for each course are added to get the total GPA credits attempted. The total GPA points are divided by the total GPA credits attempted and the result is rounded to three decimal places to obtain the GPA for the report period.

Details:  The total GPA credits attempted value is the sum of GPA credit values that are stored in the database as a number that is rounded to 5 decimal places. The total GPA points are the sum of the GPA points for each course.

Continuing with the example in the GPA Points section and assuming that GPA credits earned = GPA credits attempted:

Total GPA points are rounded from 5 decimal places to 3 decimal places. Total GPA credits attempted are rounded from 5 decimal places to 3 decimal places. Total GPA points (3 decimal places) are divided by the total GPA credits attempted (3 decimal places). The result is rounded to 3 decimal places for printing on the standardized transcript.
